What it is
A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid (found in wheat, rye and barley) used at cosmetic and prescription strengths as a mild keratolytic and skin-brightening, soothing acid.
How it works
It works partly as a mild exfoliant that normalizes keratinization within pores and partly through antimicrobial and tyrosinase-inhibiting action, which is why it is used for both blemish-prone and uneven-tone skin.
