What it is
Ectoin is a naturally occurring amino-acid derivative (a "compatible solute") first identified in extremophile bacteria, used in cosmetics as a moisture-binding, cell-protective and skin-soothing active.
How it works
It stabilizes proteins and cell membranes by forming a protective hydration shell around biomolecules, which helps skin cells retain moisture and can blunt stress-induced irritation from UV exposure, pollution, and dryness.
