What it is
A volatile essential oil steam-distilled from the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), used in cosmetics mainly as a natural fragrance/aroma component.
How it works
As an essential oil it imparts a fresh pine scent to a formula, but it also contains volatile terpene compounds (such as alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene) that are recognized skin sensitizers, particularly in oxidized form.
