Sodium Benzoate

Benzoic Acid Sodium Salt

What it is

The sodium salt of benzoic acid, a widely used preservative that inhibits mould, yeast and some bacteria in water-containing cosmetic formulas. It also contributes mild pH buffering.

How it works

In its undissociated acid form, favoured at lower formula pH, it crosses microbial cell membranes and disrupts internal pH and metabolism, inhibiting microbial growth.
