What it is
A quaternary-ammonium-modified clay (hectorite) used as a thickening and suspending agent, particularly to keep particulates like mineral UV filters evenly dispersed in oil-based or emulsion sunscreen formulas.

The organically modified clay platelets swell and network within the oil phase to build viscosity and prevent zinc oxide and other particles from settling or clumping.
