What it is
A fully N-substituted ethylenediamine derivative used in small amounts as a neutralizing/buffering agent for acrylic polymer thickeners.
How it works
Its four hydroxypropyl-substituted amine groups accept protons from acidic polymer thickeners, raising pH so the carbomer/acrylate gel network swells and thickens; the same hydroxyl/amine groups give it weak metal-ion-binding capacity.
